Extra Magical & Amazing Wedding (Part 7)

Flowers

Flowers were another important detail for me, but also one of the areas that is hardest on a budget. We like native plants, & I had the idea that was going to work at first. A sweet florist friend told me that local blooms actually aren’t all that affordable, so I researched what was in season once we picked the spring. I knew I wanted at least one type of native fern (maidenhair), mostly white or chartreuse flowers, & maybe 1-2 succulents that we could save. I also really wanted to use hydrangea & viburnum. I tried to find flowers & foliage that coordinated with our colors, & Pinterest was great for this part of the planning. I knew my wishlist was going to have to be edited, so I printed a few pictures & took them to Diane at Simply Unique. She had recently purchased the shop from the sweet couple that owned it when they decided to retire, & Ms. Betty told me that she would take great care of me. I couldn’t get over her willingness to work with our tiny budget & my giant list of expensive things that needed to be mostly replaced with affordable things. She took what I loved & figured out a way to add unique but inexpensive filler. She mentioned that she had hens & chicks in her yard at home, & agreed that I could bring maidenhair fern, rosemary, & a pincushion plant for her to add to our bouquets. Diane asked for me to come by a few days before to confirm that what she ordered would work, & I was overwhelmed with what she had done with our budget.

Flowers

Simply Unique (yay!)

The shop was filled with frosted plastic tubs of beautiful flowers, & she had an assortment of natural accessories on the table. I had shown her a picture with expensive scabiosa pods, & she brought out large natural pods to which she added succulents & more of the green tick dianthus in the center that I loved. I took a woven placemat purchased on clearance at Target, & she added that to her stash for making our beautiful bouquets. She thought of all the extras, & made sure to have enough of the herbs & succulents for our boutonnieres. She even asked for a tray so that she could fashion an initial out of chartreuse button mums. The way everything worked with our already amazing wedding party made me incredibly happy, it just added to our outstanding day! We have several great florists in the area, but make sure to see Simply Unique for outstanding service on any special floral project!

Decor

We, along with Noelle & Brigid, made our favors that doubled as mini decorations with succulents, moss, soil & gravel from Stanley’s & the 2 big hardware stores, and jars that our friends & family saved (our youngest nephew worked on all the baby food jars, ha.)

Kim, Brigid & Taylor styled the whole reception area using mismatched flowers, containers, tablecloths, burlap & twine. We used one of our small tire planters as a centerpiece, & Julie & Brigid made special succulent centerpieces for us with vintage ceramic planters & tire planters that they painted (what a sweet gift!) Mom & Libby pitched in to make it all come together, & I heard Julie lit all of our tiny tea lights. They all got ready, & then filled rummage sale jars & glasses and metal containers with assorted carry-out flowers.

My now father-in-law & mother-in-law brought up the most gorgeous bouquets & boutonnieres from Simply Unique in Knoxville. I grabbed Aunt Faye when she arrived & had her put the xo tags on the favor jars, and to spruce up the iris & mint that my brother-in-law carted all the way from his mom’s yard in middle Tennessee so that we could have her there in spirit.

A few flowers even made it onto our outstanding & completely delicious cakes from MagPies Bakery, featured in this post. Our food from Holly’s eventful Dining rounded out our perfect day, accented with yummy sangria (thank you, bartender, for saving me that glass!) I couldn’t have paid a wedding planner to do it better (or have afforded it), & I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to repay all this work with the assortment of items we collected for everyone to use. Ashley & Jenny from Ashley Moreno Photography rocked their talent, we love our photos. The Valley View Lodge, featured in this post, really was a magical place when it’s atmosphere came together with all this decor, seriously incredible. We actually decided to use no additional lighting & less decor so that guests could enjoy the beauty of the lodge. They were accommodating as our party carried later into the evening, & allowed later check-in & an area to take our revelry after hours. Jessica made sure to keep us festive with a chilly run for the good champagne she had stowed in a planter at the lodge. ;)

Bob was amazing as the officiant, we loved having him perform our ceremony before his retirement; it was extra sweet of his wife Kay to play Simple Gifts for us on her lap dulcimer. Debra B. was an excellent coordinator, she did a perfect job of calmly getting all of us where we needed to be. Libby was such a great friend for Mom, a reminder of sweet family friends growing up, & so much extra help to all of us!

Our bridesmaid gifts were from j. crew, etsy, bliss & fizz. Groomsmen gifts  were custom flasks from Liquid Courage (while they were still in Tennessee) & Inseine Creations bay rum shave soap (we also had our favorite Inseine Creations soap in a basket for our lodge guests.)

Extra thanks again to all of our sweet family & friends, & also our vendors, for going out of their way to make it such an amazing day!

Extra Magical & Amazing Wedding (Part 6)

Food

I’m not quite sure how it happened, but we had both Magpies cakes & Holly’s Eventful Dining for our reception. When I met with Peggy from Magpies, I described what we had in mind for food, & she mentioned that maybe we could get Holly’s catering company to do it. Good food is not just a Southern thing, but a family thing. Families get together over favorite recipes, & updates to classics grow the recipe books along with the families over generations. I really wanted the food to be a combination of our favorites, & family favorites, that everyone could enjoy. She categorized it as Southern picnic, & then Holly & I emailed to narrow down our menu.

We knew we wouldn’t have to worry about the cake because Peggy & her staff don’t mess around, & it was extra delicious. I’ve known Peggy for several years now, & I can’t get over how truly great she is. She has all this talent bundled up in that petite frame, & brings out better in everyone around her. We all love her for her talent & wit, but her sweetness is reflected in her incredible treats. I wanted a simple, rustic cake, & maybe a small peanut butter or chocolate cake for the groom’s cake. We somehow got the most gorgeous white cake with the all-butter Magpies flavor, & with beautiful detail. We discussed dogwood blooms, but the Magpies crew didn’t like the way they blended with the cake on our big day. I got to keep a few of the sweet fondant blooms anyway, & we got small grassy green dots to coordinate with our vintage floral decor. They added leftover flowers when the cakes were delivered to coordinate with the reception. The groom’s cake was a good bit larger than I expected, & complete with chocolate ganache. Holy goodness.

It’s hard to find potato salad that can compete with all the great potato salad recipes in my family, but Holly’s staff did that. We didn’t try any of the bacon or chicken salad, but heard it was delicious. And the deviled eggs, hummus & coordinating sides were perfect.

I have a background in event planning, but my favorite advice was from my sister. My mom & aunt have surely had an influence on my entertaining style, but my sister is a master of events. She reminded me that we would be busy visiting with everyone, & recommended that we have the caterer put aside plates of food for us. Holly & her nimble staff upped the ante with a “Hillbilly Bento Box” that they had a friend deliver to our room. They were already extra sweet & gracious, & then they did that!

We were so busy with photos & visiting that family had to remind us to cut the cake, & I couldn’t even get over to sample the white sangria that Brigid, Taylor & John mixed up (which was inspired by the sangria that Aunt Faye served at my cousin Paige’s wedding a few years before.) When guests were starting to leave & we went out the the porch to dance to the song Clark & Dave wrote for us, the bartender held up the glass of sangria that he had saved for me. It was completely delicious. After we visited with our friends early into the morning, we got back to our room, & we were starving. Holly’s amazing bento box to the rescue, hot damn. She had them include tempeh rolls instead of chicken salad for us. Dear lord, it was the best thing we could have eaten (& probably helped to keep us from having giant hangovers from the festivities the next morning.)

Extra Magical & Amazing Wedding (Part 5)

Details:

Jewelry

We got our platinum & tungsten carbide rings from a local jeweler, Fountain City Jewelers (Brad wanted a durable ring, & I’m happy he liked a budget friendly one.) Thanks Jerry!

I wore tiny pearl earrings with silver hatched leaves Mom wore when she married Dad. My necklaces were a heart locket that our dad gave to my sister & me before he passed away, & a chalcedony stone on silver thread necklace that I made a few years ago. My sister-in-law found the Victoria’s Secret U-plunge bra in nude after we got my dress, it’s great for a deep v neckline.

*Cardigan - It’s still chilly at night in the spring even in the foothills, so we figured it would be good to have cardigans for the reception. After not finding what I had in mind, I decided that I would probably be fine running around talking with everyone anyway. I didn’t wear one, but wanted to mention that Brigid carted me to at least 5 different places looking for a cropped aqua, natural or winter-white cardi, & then brought me 4 white ones to try the day before the wedding (we realized that spring knits are incredibly white compared to my milk white dress.) She also washed a few dishes, picked up fruit for the beverages, & then potted our hydrangeas, fern & yarrow in the 2 metal tubs for the aisle decorations that doubled as gifts for our moms. Because, you know, she wasn’t busy working or getting ready herself or anything.

Fellas

My good friend Kelie recommended Express, & it’s one of the best pieces of advice we got. We got Brad’s gray vest & pants during a great sale, I think it was buy one get one 50% off, & then $40.00 off that.

He wore a light blue check Gap shirt Mom got him for Christmas, a TJMaxx tie that he already had, a bottle opener belt buckle from Metalogical on etsy, & gray Emerica shoes from Pluto Sports.

The groomsmen wore either J. Ferrar gray sharkskin from JC Penney or clearance Perry Ellis from Dillard’s suits with their own white shirts, along with different gray shoes & ties that were their own or from TJMaxx.

Our handsome oldest nephew walked me down the aisle in his suit from Dillard’s, gray Tom’s shoes, & Grandaddy’s sharpshooter pin. Our youngest nephews rocked being ring bearers in blue shirts & gray pants their mom picked out from Gap & Crew Cuts, & Converse shoes. All 3 wore Bro Ties bow ties in gray or green seersucker (and they’re made in TN!) The older ring bearer carried a custom Forget Me Knot pillow made with fabric & trim that coordinated with the bridesmaid dresses.
